Met 2024-11-26 12:00 at Shenzhen Marriott Nanshan, Shenzhen, China.Great-grandparents moved to Malaysia from China. He grew up in Malaysia, got a pharmacy degree in Singapore and worked in that field in Singapore for seven years. He and a business partner and investor researched where to get into coffee shop business, and after Bangkok, chose Shenzhen. Loves it here now, branding and marketing for Chinese clients.
Shenzhen is so welcoming to outsiders, because everyone is an outsider. So liveable, like living 5 years in the future, the speed and convenience and accuracy of service is great. Groceries ordered online arrive within 29 minutes. Ecommerce is perfect. Very clean and green city, like Singapore.
A few years back, Chinese government did a huge crackdown on drunk driving, with harsh penalties, and taxi company Didi created the folding-bike service for someone to drive you home in your car. These systematic changes influence future generations.
Just got married. Noticed that Malaysian family was guided much more by tradition than mainland China. Malaysian Chinese use traditional not simplified writing. He's having a baby next year, so I raved a lot about that.
He loves and translates wuxia novels so we talked about using AI for translation. Local Chinese sometimes can't use OpenAI or Claude because the interface is all in English.
