Met 2025-12-05 13:00 at InterContinental Shanghai Ruijin, Shanghai.Kate has taught me so much about living in China and has such a generous mindset to life and people here. Too many insights to list. She’d be a great evangelist or embassador for Shanghai or China in general, enticing people to move here.
Her and husband and 18-year-old son moved here from Serbia and love it. Husband is a heavy metal musician that produces locally and put on a Kiss tribute show with him in the Paul Stanley role. Son put has art in an exhibition.
Kate does Toastmasters. There are over 100 local Toastmasters clubs here and it’s all volunteer. Women enroll for training more than men maybe because women have more social pressure to keep working on themselves.
Shanghai is often a testing place for new business ideas, which if successful get rolled out nationwide.
American tech companies offices are closing or paused because US said they can’t access US servers from here, so that’s hurt business, but it’s made Shanghai even more dynamic, adaptive.
Retirement age used to be quite low.
In other cultures if something isn’t just right they say, “No. We can’t do that.” but here in China they find a way, find a workaround to get it done.
Food delivery people on motorbikes now have helmets with audio GPS instructions so they don’t have to look down at their phone.
