Matt Chung
Introvert best known for his community-building.
Matt’s great insight:
Communities form around solutions.
That was profound to me, since I’ve heard so many people try to build a community just for the sake of it - like throwing a party.
Matt and I have two mutual friends, including Jenxi in Shenzhen, who he speaks to every day.
Matt lived in Shenzhen for two years.
The more we talked about it, the more I missed it.
Great-grandparents from China came here at a time when it was run by the British, so they had their kids (his grandparents) speak only English.
Because his parents speak only English, they sent Matt to an all-Chinese school, which was a little traumatic, as he just barely kept his head above water, learning everything in Chinese.
He can get by in Chinese, now.
He’s wide (“horizontal”) on many things, but deeply vertical on food in his neighborhood.
Made his community site because too many people post pictures of food but don’t say where it is.
So he started identifying places by the photo context, and posting the location in the comments.
