Julian Christian Anderson
First I had to ask about his surname, Anderson. He said in the 80s, Chinese Indonesians were encouraged to change their name, and while most including uncles changed to Indonesian names, his dad chose Anderson, named after a tennis player he liked. Funny side effect is when he calls a taxi, and the app shows the driver his name, the driver is often looking for a white European.
He grew up in Bandung, which has nicer weather, but smaller streets and less public transportation means more traffic, so he finds the quality of life better in Jakarta. Lives in BSD neighborhood.
Works remotely for a U.S. company earning in USD, steady job for the last six years, so local currency valuation has benefitted him, though it hurts his friends earning locally.
People are worried about the government, and the failed government programs like the free lunch. Knows a woman with nine kids who would rather skip a meal than have the free lunch. They all celebrated when the program was cancelled.
