His family is Betawi, which isn’t a concrete ethnic group, but rather, “If you speak Betawi, you are Betawi.”
Wikipedia says the term Betawi “emerged in the 18th century as an amalgamation of various ethnic groups into Batavia” - now known as Jakarta.
So, people who moved to Jakarta from all over.
In Indonesia, it’s common for your name to be all given names. No family names.
He’s into user interface design, and always has been.
Now working for a company that gives him random design projects worldwide: currently doing a project in Porto Portugal, and Dubai.
Working late shift is common here: 4pm-midnight, when working remotely for international companies.
I asked about how Indonesians consider the neighboring countries and he said Indonesia schools didn’t teach much else about the region, so most people don’t have many thoughts on it.
