Arief Aziz

Arief and I have been friends since 2011 when we met in Singapore, and he had me over to the house of his cousin - Nadiem Makarim - who had just created Gojek, then asked me to speak at TEDxJakarta. This is my first time in Jakarta since then.

Yesterday Nadiem Makarim was sentenced to 10 years in prison on a dubious charge, so of course we were reflective about the state of things in Indonesia. He taught me the word “technocratic” as we talked about how Lee Kwan Yew was authoritarian but technocratic, basing decisions on the wisdom of the specialist experts in each given field.

He said next time I come to Indonesia I must go to Komodo, which is the most beautiful, especially for scuba.
