Kumar and I met 12 years ago in Singapore through our dear friend Pete Kellock. The new translation of the Kural: translating poetry is hard. Kumar created a popular system of Carnatic music notation. He explained the difference between Hindustani and Carnatic music. His PhD was a study in human musicology. Neither of us can let music be in the background. It’s almost a crime to not be vocal about politics these days. South India resisted colonization. A date is not actually a time but a place, since dates are what we call our position in orbit around the sun. But Earth never comes back to the same spot, so it’s not exact.
